A break(fast) in the Camino de Santiago

El Salon is an old restaurant in the way of the pilgrims who walk to Santiago de Compostela. The new owner wanted to differentiate from the other options in 50 kms (which are very classical) offering healthy options as yogurt, gluten free and vegan dishes as well as Spanish omelette pincho (sandwich in small baguette bread).

There are few food places in the area with a proper branding so differentiating wasn’t really a challenge, but we went for a BOLD statement with a cartoony and colourful choice based in the traditional mascots from the old school USA dinners.

SYMBOL

We kept the name of the old restaurant since it was a well known place in the area and we wanted locals also feel welcome among the new target.

The (main) mascot was a walking & whistling cup of coffee with cool sunglasses passing by. But this wasn’t the only mascot we used, since we designed a whole batch of mascots based in the food served in the menu.

Lettering

The lettering for the horizontal logo is based in the american cartoony style. It was carefully designed with ligatures and paying special attention to the legibility since it was planned to be painted (old sign painting style) in the windows so it could be seen from the road.

CHARACTERS

Each one with its own personality but all of them based in the menu offered by El Salón.

MENU

The menu offers a three prices option with many combinations possible, which was a bit challenging as a designer but I’m happy with the result. You can see all the options and easily choose the dishes you want for refuelling and continuing your walk to Santiago de Compostela.
