Shortfilm festival in Cuenca (Spain)

Valley of the Gwangi

Frank McCarthy, poster art for “Valley of the Gwangi”. The movie was filmed with creature effects provided by Ray Harryhausen, the last dinosaur-themed film he animated.

Concavenator

Concavenator corcovatus, a fossil discovered in the Las Hoyas fossil site of Spain.
This dinossaur had structures resembling quill knobs on its forearm, a feature known only in birds and other feathered theropods, such as Velociraptor.

Ciudad Encantada

The rock formations of Ciudad Encantada are karst formations made of limestone and dolomite, which date back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 90 million years ago.

Ciudad Encantada appears as a location in the following films:

  • A Professional Gun, 1968
  • The Valley of Gwangi, 1969
  • Conan the Barbarian, 1982
  • The World is not enough, 1999

Gwangi II

The result is an imagined poster for a sequel of Gwangi, something like "The attack of the Concavenator" where the actual dinosaur found in Cuenca strikes again!

The style is a reminiscence of the pulp magazine covers and vintage posters where the brush gesture was visible and the actual shapes or colors were an optical effect.
